WIC – Improving the health and nutrition of our nation
As the nation’s premier public health nutrition program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is proven to be one of the most cost-effective and positive public health intervention programs in the nation. WIC is a federally funded intervention program designed to influence lifetime nutrition and health behaviors for low and moderate income women and children up to age five with, or at risk of developing, nutrition-related health problems including overweight and obesity. What makes WIC so uniquely effective is the quality of services it renders in providing healthy WIC food packages; delivering nutrition education in a fun, interactive, and participant-centered education; promoting and supporting breastfeeding; referring participants to health and community services; and actively networking within the community to create and maintain outreach services as well as establishing long-term successful partnerships.

California WIC – Touching the lives of 1.5 million people every month
Each month 84 local WIC programs throughout the state serve almost 1.5 million pregnant and postpartum women, infants and young children. Nearly 60 percent of all babies born in California are on WIC. With its broad participant base, proven effectiveness, and widespread support, WIC is a critical player in California’s efforts to improve health and prevent obesity. California WIC is leading the way with the integration of a new healthier WIC food package, participant-centered nutrition education and breastfeeding support into the entire WIC experience. WIC staff place the health and wellbeing of participants and their community at the center of everything it does.
