Online Education

Student and employer demands for advanced education and certification within professional fields of study has sparked the growth in master’s degree enrollments. WIC employees are advancing their career by completing education requirements online. There are several accredited online DPD programs where you can receive the “Verification Statement” that would make you eligible to apply for a dietetic internship. You can easily find hundreds of online nutrition classes and degrees, but it’s important that you carefully evaluate the credibility of the programs and the classes being offered. Many online classes may not be transferable to other universities even from accredited, well-respected programs; therefore, make sure you research this prior to registering. There are numerous accrediting agencies for secondary schools in the United States, which are approved by the United States Department of Education (USDE). These include national, regional, specialty, distance education, etc. USDE maintains a database of Accredited Programs and Institutions: https://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html. Make sure the program from colleges and/or universities are included on the database, in the approved areas of study.

NEW Master’s Degree Requirement

Beginning January 1, 2024, CDR will require that all candidates have a master’s degree to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians.  At this time, CDR states that the graduate level degree can be in any major despite it being unrelated to nutrition and dietetics. The individual must have a graduate degree and meet the other requirements for registration eligibility (ACEND accredited DPD coursework and supervised practice) and is granted by a U.S regionally accredited college/university, or foreign equivalent. Students entering college to become a RDN need to plan carefully and determine how long it will take to complete a master’s degree and the other requirements for registration eligibility (ACEND accredited DPD coursework and supervised practice) by December 31, 2023 to be eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians starting January 1, 2024.

Not Just Any Degree

Carefully consider a master’s degree in a field that will advance your career as a dietitian. WIC dietetic internships give consideration for the following graduate degrees: public health, nutrition, community health/nutrition, health promotion, nutrition education, consumer science, program administration/management, maternal and child health or related field.
